How Much Is Your Pay Rise Really Worth After Inflation?

A 5% pay rise during 3% inflation improves purchasing power, but not by exactly 2%. The precise real increase is about 1.94% before tax.

Turn the headline percentage into money first

A pay-rise percentage is difficult to judge until it is translated into annual, monthly and per-paycheck amounts. Multiply your current gross salary by the increase rate to find the annual change. Add that amount to the current salary to find the new gross salary.

For example, a 5% increase on a £50,000 salary adds £2,500 a year, producing a new gross salary of £52,500. That is £208.33 a month, £104.17 on a twice-monthly payroll, £96.15 over 26 biweekly pay periods, or £48.08 a week. These are gross figures before income tax, social contributions, pension deductions and other payroll items.

Compare the raise with inflation correctly

Inflation measures how prices change across a basket of goods and services. If prices rise, a larger salary does not buy proportionately more. A quick estimate subtracts inflation from the raise, but the exact calculation divides the two growth factors:

Real pay change = (1 + salary increase) / (1 + inflation) - 1

With a 5% raise and 3% inflation, the exact real change is 1.05 divided by 1.03, minus one: approximately 1.94%. Expressed in today's money, the new £52,500 salary is worth about £50,970.87 after one year of 3% inflation. Purchasing power has improved by roughly £970.87 relative to the original £50,000, not by the full £2,500 headline increase.

What if the raise is below inflation?

A positive salary increase can still be a real-terms pay cut. If salary rises 2% while prices rise 4%, the exact real change is about -1.92%. The amount on the payslip is higher, but its estimated purchasing power is lower. If salary does not change during 4% inflation, the real decline is about 3.85%, rather than exactly 4%, because the comparison uses the new price level.

Repeated raises compound

If a £50,000 salary rises by 5% every year for five years, the nominal salary becomes about £63,814. If inflation is 3% every year, that fifth-year salary is worth about £55,047 in today's money. Constant annual raises are not guaranteed, and inflation rarely remains fixed, so this is a scenario rather than a forecast. It is still useful for testing whether a career plan, contract or pay offer could preserve purchasing power.

Gross pay is not take-home pay

The extra amount reaching your bank account can differ substantially from the gross increase. Tax rates, deductions, benefit eligibility and payroll rules vary by country and individual. A raise can also move part of income into a higher marginal tax band without causing all income to be taxed at that higher rate. How to evaluate a pay offer

  1. Enter your current annual gross salary and the proposed percentage increase.
  2. Select the number of pay periods used by your employer.
  3. Compare the annual, monthly and per-paycheck gross changes.
  4. Use a credible inflation assumption for your country and period.
  5. Check the exact real percentage and today's-money result.
  6. Consider bonuses, pension contributions, healthcare, leave, working hours and commuting costs separately.

A salary decision is wider than one percentage. The calculator makes the cash and purchasing-power effects explicit so that the remaining trade-offs can be considered on equal terms.
